State police respond to escape of nine juveniles from Berks County detention center

The Pennsylvania State Police are currently engaged in a search for nine juveniles who absconded from a secure treatment and detention facility in Berks County on Sunday evening. The incident occurred prior to 9 p.m. at the Abraxas Academy in Morgantown, Pennsylvania. According to state police, a riot broke out at the academy, located on Academy Drive, which resulted in the escape of the juvenile offenders who are currently at large. State and local law enforcement officials responded to the scene and have since confirmed that the juvenile detention center is now under control. The escaped juveniles are believed to be wearing white or grey shirts, and there have been reports of injuries to the staff. Members of the public who encounter these individuals are urged to contact 911 immediately. Abraxas Academy is a specialized multi-service facility that provides secure residential treatment and detention services for male youth aged between 14 to 18 in ninth grade or above. This incident follows the recent apprehension of Danelo Cavalcante, a convicted murderer who had escaped from a Chester County prison and remained at large for 14 days, causing considerable concern among local residents.
